As a project for a wet day, I thought that it would be interesting to compare the images produced by the three popular weather satellite image decoder programs:

• APTDecoder - the free APT weather satellite recording and decoding system developed by Patrik Tast;
• SatSignal - a commercial APT satellite decoder developed by David Taylor;
• WxToImg - a commercial APT weather satellite recording and decoding system developed by Abstract Technologies.

All three programs are capable of producing false colour images enhanced in a number of different ways. For reasons of space, I selected a single image type from each program, which I felt gave the most natural-looking results. Two separate recordings are used. One was recorded by myself, the other was a wave file supplied on CD with the R2FX receiver. All images were saved as bitmap files, then recompressed to JPG format using IrfanView.
